United Legal Defense Fund for Immigrants
After raising and deploying nearly $400,000 to our local immigrant-facing nonprofits from 2018 to 2020, the Cambridge Community Foundation announces the re-activation of the United Legal Defense Fund for Immigrants, to replenish the fund and continue responding to the elevated need for legal defense. Our immigrant neighbors were among the hardest-hit throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and alongside the increased demands for asylum and family reunification work in the Afghan community and the parallel needs of Haitian families applying for Temporary Protected Status, there is a tremendous need for free and affordable legal support.
The United Legal Defense Fund for Immigrants was first launched in March 2018 in partnership with Former Mayor of Cambridge Marc C. McGovern to respond to a growing need for legal support among immigrant neighbors impacted by the stress and uncertainty of ongoing shifts in Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. By joining hands with the City of Somerville to extend the fund across city borders, we unified efforts to raise funds for the most vulnerable families in our community.
Thank you for joining us in bolstering the capacity for legal support amongst our immigrant-serving nonprofits.
The United Legal Defense Fund for Immigrants is a Fund at the Cambridge Community Foundation.
